A Case Against Wealth Taxes

And Suggestions for Alternatives

During 2024’s G20 in Brazil, the host nation led an effort to impose a global wealth tax. With this year’s gathering in South Africa, IATP Advisor Chris Hattingh from South Africa’s Institute for Race Relations and IATP Fellows Alex Jelloian and Reem Ibrahim have written for the bloc’s T20 blog warning that wealth taxes would undermine development and prosperity across Africa and the developing world.

Instead, they argue that South Africa and other Global South countries should prioritise economic freedom by establishing institutions that uphold the rule of law and promote private sector growth.
